DESCRIPTION

Red onions are cultivars of the onion (Allium cepa) with purplish-red skin and white flesh tinged with red. They are most commonly used in the culinary arts, but the skin of the red onion has also been used as a dye.

STORAGE

Store unrefrigerated in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place up to 1 month.

EAT

Boil whole, add to soups and stews or creamed dishes like creamed peas and onions. Red onions make a great addition to salads and may also be pickled or marinated.

For easy peeling, trim ends and blanch in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove onions from the pot and drop them into cold water. When cooled enough to touch, drain the water, and easily peel off outer skin.
